The Gray Muzzle
Fig. 4 — The elder statesman, at his post by the window.
There comes a season when the walk shortens and the sleep deepens, when the muzzle frosts over and the eyes go soft and certain. This chapter is for the dogs in that season — the ones who taught you everything and are now, graciously, teaching you this.
We hold no illusions and make no promises beyond honesty. What we offer the elders is what we offer every dog: careful preparations, plainly described, and the reminder that the best medicine was always the time itself.
Pace
Let them set it. The sniff is the point of the walk, not the distance.
Rest
Senior dogs sleep like they mean it. Guard the nap as fiercely as they once guarded the door.
Routine
Same measure, same hour, same bowl. Predictability is a kindness.
Attention
Note the small changes. You know this dog better than any instrument we own.
Set aside for them
The Gray Muzzle Reserve
Lion's mane and reishi, set aside for the elders of the pack.
The Honour Roll
Names the wall keeps kindly
Every elder who has shared a home and a heart earns a place on the brass. Inscribe their name — with their years, if you wish — and the wall will remember.
The brass is bare — the wall awaits its first name.
The Discovery Dram lasted nine days. He has opinions now. Chief among them: more. Please advise whether a Standing Order can be made out to a beagle directly, as he no longer trusts me to handle it.
